Dear Friends,

We hope you enjoyed a wonderful summer and are well on your way to a productive fall. Before we know it, the busy winter holidays will be upon us.

As time progresses, it's important to think about our own changing needs, too – particularly when it comes to our health. At Alamance Regional Medical Center, we offer comprehensive care for you and your family throughout all seasons of life. And this promise is reflected in the articles in this issue of Well Now.

Are you thinking of starting a family, or are you expecting a baby? On page 2, we discuss the Apgar score, a method that helps us assess the health of newborns right after birth. We measure the baby's heart rate, muscle tone, reflexes and more. On this page, you will also learn about our Special Care Nursery.

Cancer is something that can affect anyone at any stage of life. Alamance Regional offers a variety of services to give you – or your loved one – the care you need, close to home. On page 3, learn more about our comprehensive cancer care services, our new Cancer Center in Mebane, and how we partner with Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and UNC Health Care to offer you specialized oncology clinics.

As we grow older, monitoring bone health becomes increasingly important. Osteoporosis can affect us at any age, but aging adults face an even greater risk. Turn to page 5 for tips on how to protect your bones and information about scheduling a bone density screening.

Wishing you and all the members of your family a healthy fall and winter!
