Healthy Woman

Healthy Woman is a women's membership program sponsored by Alamance Regional Medical Center. Monthly lunch programs provide information on a variety of health topics. Lunch events are the second Tuesday of each month from noon until 1 p.m. in the Grand Oaks Center on the Alamance Regional campus. There is a $5 registration fee. Pregnancy, Parenting & Birth

Boot Camp for New Dads
First-time dads are encouraged to take part in this unique and innovative program that helps new fathers become confidently engaged with their infants and support their mates as they transition into their roles as new parents. Topics include safety issues, relationship with mom, feeding and changing a baby, pets in the house, crying and finances. This free class is taught to fathers by fathers.

When:   Classes are held the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Upcoming dates are Dec. 12, Jan. 9 and Feb. 13.
Where:   Medical Arts Center, Lower Level, Room 140.

Infant Massage
Learn specific massage strokes that can foster an emotional bond and communication between you and your baby. This class is taught by a certified infant massage instructor. The cost is $45.

When:   A Monday morning class will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Nov. 9, 16 and 23 in the Pediatric Rehabilitation Clinic on South Church Street in Burlington.

Baby Sign Language
Babies can use simple hand signals to communicate wants and needs before they are able to talk. Participants will learn and practice beginning signs. This class is for parents of babies 0-18 months. The cost is $45. Call (336) 538-7550 for dates and more information.

Childbirth Preparation
This free five-week course is taught by certified childbirth educators. Expectant parents are encouraged to take this class in their third trimester, completing it by their 35th to 36th week.

When:   Mondays, 7 to 9 p.m. from Jan. 4 to Feb. 1 and March 1 to March 29. Thursdays, 7 to 9 p.m. from Jan. 14 to Feb. 11 and March 11 to April 8.

Weekend Childbirth Blitz
This weekend class covers the material in the childbirth preparation course in a condensed format.

When:   December 5 and 6, 1 to 5 p.m.
Where:   Education Center, Lower Level, Alamance Regional.

Childbirth Preparation Refresher
Expectant couples who have been through the labor and delivery process before or who have previously completed prepared childbirth classes can take a Prepared Childbirth Refresher course. There are two sessions in this course.

When:   Nov. 23 and Nov. 30; Jan. 18 and 25 from 7 to 9 p.m.

BirthPlace Tours
Tours of the BirthPlace are conducted during the third class of Childbirth Preparation, the Weekend Childbirth Blitz, and during the Big Brother/Big Sister Class. If you would like to request an individual tour of the BirthPlace, please call (336) 538-7362 to schedule an appointment.

Preparing Big Brother and Sister
This one-session course prepares children and their parents for the arrival of the new baby. This course is recommended for siblings three years of age or older.

When:   The first Tuesday of each month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Upcoming dates are Dec. 1, Jan. 5 and Feb. 2.
Where:   Education Center, Lower Level, Alamance Regional.

Infant CPR and Child Safety
This class is recommended for parents or grandparents who want to learn infant and child CPR. The class also includes information about how to make a child’s environment safe and basic rescue techniques.

When:   Classes are held the third Thursday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. Upcoming dates include Nov. 19, Jan. 21 and Feb. 18.
Where:   Education Center, Lower Level, Alamance Regional.

Breastfeeding Basics and More
This two-session class is for parents interested in learning more about preparation for feeding babies and breastfeeding. The course includes returning to work or school, breast milk collection and storage.

When:   The second and third Tuesday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. Upcoming dates include Dec. 8 and 15, Jan. 12 and 19 and Feb. 9 and 16.
Where:   Education Center, Lower Level, Alamance Regional.

Lactation Services
A board-certified lactation consultant is available to answer breastfeeding questions, as well as for individual consultations

Smoking Cessation Classes

Freshstart Smoking Cessation Class
The Freshstart program is designed to help adults become non-smokers. The class offers techniques to help deal with cravings and education concerning nicotine replacement products. Senior Advantage
Alamance Regional's free membership program for seniors. For information about Lunch and Learn, special seminars or membership, call (336) 538-7560.

Brown Bag Medication Review
Free to anyone 55 or older. This review of medications is offered the third Friday of each month. Reservations are required. Call (336) 538-7560 for an appointment.

Alamance Regional cardiac rehabilitation program is designed to help people with heart disease return to a healthy lifestyle. For more information, call (336) 538-8120.

Diabetes Counseling
Our intensive diabetes management program includes a series of individual appointments and group classes, as well as a comprehensive diabetes evaluation and education program. Medical Nutrition Therapy
Alamance Regional Lifestyle Center has registered dietitians who can provide recommendations to lower risk factors such as hypertension, obesity and elevated cholesterol. We can also help you manage your diet to better control diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Physician referral required. Fee charged. FREE: Needle-free HIV Testing
Alamance Cares is offering free HIV testing every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its Elizabeth Drive Clinic in Burlington. No appointments are needed for the test, and results are available within minutes. Please call Alamance Cares at (336) 538-8111 for more information.

Support Groups

Kids Can!
Kids Can! is a program for children ages 6 to 18 who have a family member with cancer. Children, teens and parents meet in separate groups to share questions and engage in fun activities. All children are welcome regardless of where their family member is receiving treatment.

Cancer Family Support Group
A support group for friends and family of cancer patients is offered the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Grand Oaks Center on the Alamance Regional Campus. This group is coordinated by the Wings to Recovery Program at the Alamance Regional Cancer Center and is open to anyone who serves as a support person for a cancer patient. Wings to Recovery for Cancer Patients
Newly diagnosed cancer patients are matched with a mentor, a cancer survivor who offers one-to-one support and listening. For more information, call Rosa Davis at the Alamance Regional Cancer Center at (336) 586-3737.

Breast Cancer Support Group
Newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, those currently undergoing treatment and long-term survivors are invited to attend. This group includes light snacks, special speakers, encouragement, support and friendship.

Arthritis Support Group
The Alamance County Arthritis Support Group provides education and support and practical information for coping with arthritis for arthritis sufferers and their families.

Grandparents Support Group
This group is for grandparents who have primary responsibility for raising their grandchildren. It is a safe place to share experiences, ask questions and seek assistance. Childcare is available.

Adult Diabetes Support Group
When:   Second Thursday of each month, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Where:   Grand Oaks Center, Room 135, Alamance Regional Campus.

Heart and Lung Support Group
This group provides support and education for individuals living with lung and/or cardiac disease and is open to anyone interested in the prevention of these diseases.

Healing Together Support Group
Support for families who have experienced the death of a baby through miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth or newborn death.

Stroke Club
The Alamance County Stroke Club provides support and education to stroke survivors and their families.

Alzheimer's and Related Disorders Family Support Group
Light refreshments are provided, or feel free to bring your own lunch or purchase lunch in the Edith St. Cafe and bring it with you.
