Healthy Woman

Healthy Woman is a women's membership program sponsored by Alamance Regional Medical Center. Monthly lunch programs provide information on a variety of health topics. Lunch events are the second Tuesday of each month from noon to 1 p.m. in the Grand Oaks Center on the Alamance Regional campus. There is a $5 registration fee. To register, call (336) 538-7970. Ask the Doctor is a physician lecture series that is held the second Thursday evening of the month from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Grand Oaks Center on the Alamance Regional Campus. Lectures are free, but residents are encouraged to register by calling (336) 538-7970.

Pregnancy, Parenting & Birth

Boot Camp for New Dads
First-time dads are encouraged to take part in this free class taught to fathers by fathers. Topics include safety issues, relationship with mom, feeding and changing a baby, pets in the house, crying and finances.

When:   Classes are held the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Upcoming dates are June 13 and July 11.
Where:   Medical Arts Center, Lower Level, Room 140.

Infant Massage
Learn specific massage strokes that can foster an emotional bond and communication between you and your baby. This series is taught by a certified infant massage instructor. The cost is $45.

When:   A Wednesday evening class will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on June 3 and 10. A Monday morning class will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on July 13, 20 and 27.
Where:   Alamance Regional Pediatric Rehabilitation Clinic, 3806 South Church Street, Burlington.

Baby Sign Language
Babies can use simple hand signals to communicate wants and needs before they are able to talk. Parents of babies 0-18 months learn and practice beginning signs in this Saturday morning class. The cost is $45.

When:   May 23, 9 a.m. to noon.
Where:   Alamance Regional Pediatric Rehabilitation Clinic, 3806 South Church Street, Burlington.

Prenatal Yoga
The practice of yoga and breathing will help you prepare both physically and mentally for the challenges of pregnancy and labor. Participants will also learn about nutrition for a healthy pregnancy. The cost is $45.

When:   This six-session class will be held each Tuesday from Oct. 6 through Nov. 10 from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m.
Where:   Alamance Regional, Lower Level, Center for Fitness and Human Movement Studies.

Infant CPR and Child Safety
This class is recommended for parents or grandparents who want to learn infant and child CPR. The class also includes information about how to make a child's environment safe and basic rescue techniques. Instructors are obstetrical nurses who are certified American Heart Association CPR instructors.

When:   Classes are held the third Thursday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. Upcoming dates include May 21, June 18 and July 16.
Where:   Medical Arts Center, Lower Level, Room 140.

Breastfeeding and Infant Nutrition
This two-session class is for parents interested in learning more about preparation for feeding babies and breastfeeding.

When:   The second and third Tuesday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. Upcoming dates include June 9 and 16 or July 14 and 21.
Where:   Education Center, Lower Level, Alamance Regional.

Childbirth Preparation
This free course consists of five classes. Instructors include certified childbirth educators, experienced labor and delivery nurses, obstetricians and pediatricians. Pain relief options are also discussed. Parents should call by the sixth month of pregnancy.

When:   Mondays, 7 to 9 p.m. from July 6 to Aug. 3 and Sept. 14 to Oct. 12. Thursdays, 7 to 9 p.m. from July 16 to Aug. 13 and Sept. 3 to Oct. 1.
Where:   Education Center, Lower Level, Alamance Regional.

Childbirth Preparation Refresher
Expectant couples who have been through the labor and delivery process before or who have previously completed prepared childbirth classes can take a Prepared Childbirth Refresher course. There are two sessions in this course.

When:   July 20 and 27, 7 to 9 p.m.

Weekend Childbirth Blitz
This weekend class covers the material offered in the prepared childbirth course in a condensed format.

When:   June 13 and 14 from 1 to 5 p.m.
Where:   Education Center, Lower Level, Alamance Regional.

Preparing Big Brother and Sister
This one-session course prepares children and their parents for the arrival of the new baby. This course is recommended for siblings 3 years of age or older.

When:   The first Tuesday of each month except July from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Upcoming dates are June 2 or Aug. 4.
Where:   Education Center, Lower Level, Alamance Regional.

Lactation Services
A board-certified lactation consultant is available to answer breastfeeding questions, as well as for individual consultations, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, call (336) 538-7387.

Mothers of Multiples – MOMS
MOMS support group is for mothers or mothers-to-be of twins, triplets or more to share challenges, concerns and advice and gain helpful information on being a mother of multiples.

When:   First Tuesday of every month.

Smoking Cessation Classes

Freshstart Smoking Cessation Class
The Freshstart program is designed to help adults become non-smokers. The class offers techniques to help deal with cravings and education concerning nicotine replacement products. Senior Advantage
Alamance Regional's free membership program for seniors. For information about Lunch and Learn, special seminars or membership, call (336) 538-7560.

Brown Bag Medication Review
Free to anyone 55 or older. This review of medications is offered the third Friday of each month. Reservations are required. Call (336) 538-7560 for an appointment.

HeartTrack
Alamance Regional's cardiac rehabilitation program is designed to help people with heart disease return to a healthy lifestyle. Call (336) 538-8120.

Diabetes Counseling
Our intensive diabetes management program includes a series of appointments over approximately three months, as well as a comprehensive diabetes evaluation and education program. Medical Nutrition Therapy
Alamance Regional's Lifestyle Center has registered dietitians who can provide recommendations to lower risk factors such as hypertension, obesity and elevated cholesterol. We can also help you manage your diet to better control diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Physician referral required. Fee charged. FREE: Needle-free HIV Testing
Alamance Cares is offering free HIV testing every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its Elizabeth Drive Clinic in Burlington. No appointments are needed for the test, and results are available within minutes. Please call Alamance Cares at (336) 538-8111 for more information.

Support Groups

Breast Cancer Support Group
Newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, those currently undergoing treatment and long-term survivors are invited to attend. This group includes light snacks, special speakers, encouragement, support and friendship.

Kids Can!
Kids Can! is a program for children ages 6 to 18 who have a family member with cancer. Children, teens and parents meet in separate groups to share questions and engage in fun activities. All children are welcome regardless of where their family member is receiving treatment.

Arthritis Support Group
The Alamance County Arthritis Support Group provides education and support and practical information for coping with arthritis for arthritis sufferers and their families.

Grandparents Support Group
This group is for grandparents who have primary responsibility for raising their grandchildren. It is a safe place to share experiences, ask questions and seek assistance. Childcare is available.

Diabetes Support Group
When:   The second Thursday of each month from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., except July and August.

Healing Together Support Group
Support for families who have experienced the death of a baby through miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth or newborn death.

Stroke Club
The Alamance County Stroke Club provides support and education to stroke survivors and their families.

Alzheimer's and Related Disorders Family Support Group
Light refreshments are provided, or feel free to bring your own lunch or purchase lunch in the Edith St. Cafe and bring it with you.
