New certified nurse-midwives scheduling number

In old English, the word midwife means "with woman." In French, it means "wise woman." In all cases, midwifery means supporting a woman in labor, and now it’s easier than ever to get that support, thanks to a new central phone number for scheduling HealthEast certified nurse-midwife appointments: 651-232-0005.

What is a midwife?

A certified nurse-midwife is a registered nurse with advanced education in midwifery and a national certification from the American College of Nurse-Midwives. In the U.S., the profession dates back to the 1920s, and today there are thousands of certified nurse-midwives practicing in all 50 states.

Midwives and birth

Women choose midwives because they like having a strong relationship with their caregiver. They appreciate midwives' natural approach to prenatal care, labor and birth, as well as the individually tailored care for each patient. Midwives stress education, counseling and continuous hands-on care during labor, birth and postpartum. They offer guidance on proper nutrition, exercise, sleep and travel, plus support a variety of labor options, including the freedom to move around, massage, a rocking chair, a deep tub or shower, a birthing ball, moist heat, pain medication and waterbirth.

Certified nurse-midwives are qualified to administer medications, order labor epidurals and perform medical procedures. When additional support is needed, they are trained to recognize and manage complications early and collaborate with doctors to ensure the safest and most effective care for women and their babies.

Gynecology care

Midwives do much more than deliver babies. Many women choose midwives for their yearly gynecological exams. Midwives are a smart choice for young women transitioning from pediatric care to adult medical care. They also provide counseling on family planning and pre-conception; health maintenance and disease prevention; and peri-menopause.
