Choosing a medical provider for your children

Choosing the right health care provider for your children is challenging. At HealthEast Clinics, you can choose either a pediatric provider (either a pediatric doctor or a pediatric nurse practitioner) or a family doctor. Pediatricians deal only with children, while family doctors can care for patients of any age. Some things you may want to consider when selecting your provider include:

  • Where are they located?
  • Do they offer same-day sick appointments?
  • Do they have any late or weekend hours?
  • What happens if you need advice after hours?
  • What hospitals are the doctors affiliated with?
  • Are there extra charges for advice calls during the day, after-hours advice calls, refilling medicines, or requests to fill out forms, etc.?
  • How many doctors are in the office? Will I always see my own doctor?
  • Are the doctors all board certified?

Pediatrics
At HealthEast Clinics, our pediatricians are focused on providing you and your child with quality care and a great experience. Everything we do centers around caring for children. We place special emphasis on wellness and prevention. Our pediatricians and pediatric nurse practitioners:

  • Provide well-child visits
  • Give immunizations
  • Diagnose and treat children's illnesses and injuries

Locations and hours
Our pediatricians practice at HealthEast Maplewood Clinic and HealthEast Woodbury Clinic.

Calls are answered 24 hours a day at both clinics by clinic staff, after-hours triage nurses or by HealthEast's answering service who can access the on-call doctor.

When needed, pediatric patients are hospitalized at Children's Hospital in St. Paul, St. John's Hospital in Maplewood and Woodwinds Health Campus in Woodbury. A HealthEast pediatrician makes daily rounds to see all hospitalized patients.

Family medicine
For some, a doctor who cares for the whole family is the right choice. Our family doctors provide compassionate care for patients of all ages. The scope of family medicine is very broad and doctors see adults and children for a variety of conditions.

Seeing a family doctor means your child would be able to see the same doctor from birth through adulthood. It also means that all members of your family can receive their primary care from the same provider. A family physician will know the medical histories of all family members and may also be more aware of the emotional and social issues within your family that can affect your child's health.
