If you suffer from these enlarged, twisted veins, then you know how uncomfortable life can be. Varicose veins can cause intense itching, aching, swelling and discoloration. Standing or even walking can be terribly uncomfortable if you have them in your legs, and most varicose veins tend to worsen over time.

There are several lifestyle choices for treating varicose veins such as changes in diet, exercise and wearing support hose.

What you and many sufferers may not realize that if these lifestyle changes can't help, there are many ways available to treat or repair this painful, irritating condition.

Treatments

If lifestyle changes don't provide you with relief, HealthEast Vascular Center offers several vein procedures.

Traditionally, vein stripping has been the most common surgical option. In this procedure, the saphenous vein is removed and blood flow then diverts to healthy veins.

HealthEast Vascular Center offers several alternatives in addition to vein stripping, including partial stripping and VNUS Closure.

All procedures have the goal of reducing pressure. Since valves cannot be repaired, the alternative is to route blood flow through healthy veins.

Partial stripping
This surgical technique was developed in the 1950s to treat surface veins. This procedure removes the diseased veins through a series of very small punctures or incisions. This is done in our office or at our outpatient surgery center.

VNUS Closure®
This procedure involves the physician making a single needle-sized incision near the knee and inserting the slender Closure catheter, guided via ultrasound. The catheter is then positioned and energized with a radiofrequency (RF) generator and slowly withdrawn, sealing the vein shut. Once this occurs, blood flow immediately diverts to healthy veins with functioning valves.

Benefits include:
  • Minimally invasive
  • Relief of symptoms
  • Short recovery
  • Less post-operative pain, bruising and discomfort than other surgical treatments
  • Resume normal activities within 1-2 days
  • Same-day procedure
  • Local or regional anesthesia
  • Good cosmetic outcome with minimal to no scarring
