No. 8 on FORTUNE'S 100 Best Companies to Work For
Employees Share the Reasons
Why They Work Here
Since opening its doors in April 1948, San Jacinto Methodist Hospital has provided our community with quality medical
care. Through the years, we've grown with the community, enhancing and expanding our services every step
of the way. The employees who make up this organization have received national recognition for their
commitment to clinical excellence. Here are just a few of their stories.
Jon Ann Watson, RN, Nurse Manager 2 South
Jon Ann Watson supervises a team meeting.
Jon Ann always knew that she wanted to go back to school to complete her degree. Knowing that San Jacinto Methodist Hospital promoted employee education, she decided to look for a job within the organization. In 1996, she was hired as a radiology clerk. Soon after starting, Jon Ann went back to school. She transferred to the Emergency Department to work nights to accommodate her class schedule. In 2000, while working on her nursing degree at Lee College, Jon Ann obtained her licensed vocational nurse (LVN) certification. She then began working as an LVN on 2 East. In 2001, she graduated from that program with her registered nurse (RN) certification. She remained on 2 East and became a charge nurse. Since then, she helped open 2 South and has been a part of that department. Two years ago she was encouraged to enroll in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, School of Nursing (UTHSCH). She acquired her BSN in July 2008. Two and a half years ago she was promoted to Nurse Manager of 2 South.
"As San Jacinto Methodist Hospital has grown, so have I," says Jon Ann. "I wear my hospital employee badge with honor. I always had wonderful mentors at the hospital who encouraged me to continue my education and worked with my schedule so that I could accommodate classes. Good people are the key to an organization's success and I believe that San Jacinto Methodist Hospital is very successful."
Jon Ann was recently accepted to the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program at UTHSCH and expects to graduate in the spring of 2011.
Soila Solis, RN, Medical/Surgery/Oncology 2 South
Soila Solis provides guidance to a
co-worker.
For Soila, finding a career was as simple as someone saying the words, "I have a job for you," and her path was destined to become a reality. In 2003, Soila started at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital as a unit clerk on 2 East, working the weekend shift. The director of the unit at that time quickly saw Soila's potential and told her that if she completed her education, he would have a job for her. In 2004, she completed her LVN at Lee College and became a nurse for 2 South.
Soila didn't stop there. In 2007, she completed her RN at Lee College and in May of that year she was accepted into the BSN program at UTHSCH graduating in the summer of 2008. Currently, she is enrolled in the MSN program at UTHSCH and hopes to graduate in 2011. Soila attributes her accomplishments to San Jacinto Methodist Hospital and the various mentors who have encouraged her to continue her education.
"I always knew that I would finish my education, but I never expected to complete my degrees so quickly and with so much enthusiasm," shares Soila. "With our classwork, we rotate through a lot of other hospitals and there is no comparison to San Jacinto Methodist Hospital."
Eventually, Soila would like to become a director and quite possibly become involved at the administration level. "For now, the sky is the limit," Soila says.
Kathy Davis, Executive Secretary, QA Administration
Kathy Davis answers the phone with
a smile.
Although Kathy's journey didn't start at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, it did begin within the Methodist Hospital System. In 1998 Kathy began working at The Methodist Hospital in Houston in Quality Assurance. She quickly transferred to San Jacinto Methodist Hospital as an Assistant Executive Secretary. In one month, Kathy became an Administrative Assistant and started working for Gail Kenny, Vice President Quality and Care Management. Through the years Kathy has participated in continuing education classes and has enjoyed job perks such as employee wellness.
"At San Jacinto Methodist Hospital no matter what your job, you always feel like you are a part of something bigger," says Kathy. "I have worked in the medical field for 27 years and had always heard good things about San Jacinto Methodist Hospital. They do so much for the employees – programs like the Employee Activity Committee and special employee events – I am truly lucky to work here."
Seven years ago she was promoted to Executive Secretary and continues
this job today.
