San Jacinto Methodist Hospital has received – for the second consecutive year – the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's "Get With The Guidelines®" Stroke Performance Achievement Award. This year the hospital was awarded the Stroke Silver Performance Achievement Award and in 2009 the Bronze Achievement Award.
The award recognizes the hospital's commitment and success in implementing
a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.
Our Commitment to Quality Stroke Care
"The fact that this is the second year in a row for this recognition is a testament to San Jacinto Methodist Hospital's commitment to providing quality stroke care," says Donna Gares, CEO and President of San Jacinto Methodist Hospital. "When treating stroke patients, time is of the essence – the more time lost, the more damage that occurs. This award recognizes the significance of time in stroke care."
The hospital has implemented a broad stroke program that consists of several elements meant to foster better outcomes. According to Gares, those elements include:
- Rapid diagnosis and treatment.
- Brain imaging technology.
- Immediate access to emergency physicians and neurologists.
- Clot-busting medications.
- An interdisciplinary approach to care and treatment through many disciplines and services.
Delivering Consistent Stroke Care
To receive the Get With The Guidelines Stroke Silver Performance Achievement
Award, San Jacinto Methodist Hospital consistently complied – for at least one year – with the requirements in the Guidelines stroke program. These requirements include aggressive use of medications like tPA, antithrombotics,
anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol-reducing drugs and smoking cessation support.
The 12-month evaluation period is the second in an ongoing self-evaluation by the hospital to continually reach the 85 percent compliance level needed to sustain this award.
