Spinal Stenosis
Standing Up to Persistent Back Pain
Jeffrey Wood, M.D., Orthopedic Spine Surgeon

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the nerve openings either around the spinal cord or nerve roots that can cause problems similar to those of a pinched nerve. Many people live with this condition all their lives without knowing it. Others, however, develop it later in life. It is most commonly found in men and women over the age of 50.

Knee Injuries and Athletes
'POP' Goes the ACL
Ray R. Valdez, M.D., Orthopedic Surgeon

The scene is all too familiar: Young athletes are playing a sport involving quick stops and starts, when suddenly one of the players hears a "pop," clutches his or her knee and falls to the ground in pain. The sideline diagnosis of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is later confirmed by a physician.

Occupational Therapy
Help Is at Hand
Vincent C. Phan, M.D., Orthopedic Surgeon

Like many of today's office workers, long hours at a computer led to Clara's repetitive stress injury. She now finds it difficult to perform everyday tasks like buttoning her shirts and cooking her family's meals. Her brother, Al, has similar complaints after jamming his hand during an intense game of pick-up basketball. And their mother has had to give up her lifelong hobby of knitting due to the pain of arthritis.
