Overcoming the Challenges of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

One of the risks of repetitive movement such as typing or assembly line work is carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). CTS occurs when a nerve in the wrist is compressed and causes pain, a burning sensation, numbness or tingling in the wrist, hand or fingers. Other risk factors for developing CTS include direct pressure on the heel of the hand, vibration, awkward posture and extremes of wrist position, according to the American Occupational Therapy Association.

CTS can be uncomfortable and frustrating, but the occupational therapists at Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas (MOST) can help you overcome the condition. After evaluating your case, we can recommend devices to help you avoid repetitive motions; improve range of motion, endurance and dexterity in the hands to aid everyday activities; and suggest exercises to help build strength and minimize symptoms.

Occupational Therapy
Help Is at Hand
Vincent C. Phan, M.D., Orthopedic Surgeon

Like many of today's office workers, long hours at a computer led to Clara's repetitive stress injury. She now finds it difficult to perform everyday tasks like buttoning her shirts and cooking her family's meals. Her brother, Al, has similar complaints after jamming his hand during an intense game of pick-up basketball. And their mother has had to give up her lifelong hobby of knitting due to the pain of arthritis.

All three family members developed their hand injuries differently, but they each sought the same kind of care to aid their recovery: occupational therapy. "Occupational therapists can help patients overcome problems with fine motor skills, visual-perceptual skills, cognitive skills and sensory processing that can occur as a result of many injuries and conditions," says Vincent C. Phan, M.D., hand surgeon at Methodist Orthopaedic Specialists of Texas (MOST). Aimed at helping individuals achieve independence and improve quality in all areas of their lives, occupational therapy can help people cope with:

  • Work-related injuries such as lower back problems or repetitive stress injuries
  • Limitations following a stroke or heart attack
  • Arthritis, multiple sclerosis or other chronic conditions
  • Birth injuries, learning problems or developmental disabilities
  • Mental health or behavioral problems such as Alzheimer's and post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Broken bones or other injuries from falls, sports or accidents
  • Vision or other problems that affect the ability to drive

"A hand specialist can assess injuries and work with an occupational therapist to tailor treatment plans accordingly," says Dr. Phan. They can also evaluate homes and job sites to recommend modifications and suggest special equipment that may help a person return to a normal life.

The Care You Need
The occupational therapists at MOST care for a variety of injuries and conditions, many of which affect the hands. "Because of their complex structure and the high demands placed on them, hands are particularly vulnerable to injury," says Dr. Phan. Some sports, activities, hobbies and jobs (including hair stylist, dental hygienist and musician) are especially hard on the hands.

If you or a loved one complains of hand pain or may otherwise benefit from occupational therapy, schedule an appointment with Dr. Phan for an evaluation by calling toll-free at 866-567-4130.
