By bringing together a multidisciplinary team of specialists, sub-specialists and other health professionals trained in providing spinal care services, the new Spine Center at Methodist Willowbrook Hospital offers patients in northwest Houston customized treatment programs based on scientific research and proven treatment methods for neck and back pain.

"We believe that a well-coordinated approach is essential to proper diagnosis and effective treatment of back and neck pain," says Beryl Ramsey, chief executive officer at Methodist Willowbrook Hospital and senior vice president of The Methodist Hospital System. "At our Spine Center, patients will find everything they need for diagnosis and treatment in one convenient location that's close to home."

Under the direction of Hosun Hwang, M.D., medical director of the Spine Center, the multidisciplinary team encompasses neurologists, neurosurgeons and orthopedic spine surgeons, as well as nurse practitioners, physical therapists, rehabilitation specialists and other professionals specially trained in diagnosing and treating back and neck pain. Patients also benefit from the latest diagnostic and therapeutic technology, as well as state-of-the-art systems for maximum comfort and safety.

Treatment options available through the Spine Center include physical therapy that utilizes specific exercises, manual therapy, aquatic therapy, traction, and modalities such as heat and electrical stimulation to treat back pain due to nerve or musculoskeletal problems. Some patients may benefit from physical medicine and rehabilitation to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life for those with back pain. When surgery is necessary, new, minimally invasive techniques yield remarkable success in reducing pain, preventing permanent injury and restoring function.

While referrals are not required, the Spine Center team maintains regular communications with all physicians who have referred their patients for treatment.

The new Human Performance Lab at Methodist Willowbrook Hospital is the first of its kind in northwest Houston to bring the technology and expertise once only available at the Texas Medical Center to the community. Three primary tests – resting metabolic rate and body composition analysis, VO2 max with body composition and VO2 max with estimated lactate threshold – provide endurance athletes with valuable tools for training and aid bariatric patients in meeting pre-surgery requirements and sustaining post-surgery weight loss. The lab is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with evening appointments available on Wednesdays and weekend appointments on Saturday mornings. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 281-737-0466.
