make a great
team. Married for
30 years, they have
raised three children,
worked in rewarding
careers – she in
education, he in
spending time at
wine festivals and
swap meets. They
also dieted together, losing weight,
gaining weight, losing weight, gaining
weight. It seemed like this was a fight
they couldn't win.
"We had tried every diet in the world,
but nothing worked. Finally, we
decided to give weight loss surgery a
try for health reasons," says Cherie,
who had a gastric sleeve procedure
performed by Dexter Turnquest, M.D.,
medical director of the Surgical
Weight Loss Center at Methodist
Willowbrook Hospital. "So far I have
lost 70 pounds and now weigh 199.
I don't have to take blood pressure
medicine any more, have no more
acid reflux, and osteoarthritis pain is
a lot less. Today, my overall health is
wonderful and I'm looking forward to
reaching my goal weight by losing at
least another 30 pounds."
Following Cherie's recovery and
inspired by her success in dropping
from a clothing size 24 to 14, Mark had
the same surgery several months later.
"Dr. Turnquest and the staff at the
hospital were tremendous with Cherie,
so it was just natural that I would have
my surgery there too," says Mark, who
started at 330 pounds, lost 72 pounds
in seven months, and plans to lose
another 30. "My type 2 diabetes and
high blood pressure are gone now and I
went from a size 46 waist to a 36. That's
the same size I was when I graduated
from high school in 1976."

After losing a combined 142 pounds to
date, Cherie and Mark have found that
exercising is easier, they have more
energy, and they can enjoy socializing
without being conscientious about
their weight. They also have motivated
others with their weight loss success,
having each referred a co-worker to
Dr. Turnquest, and their daughter is
scheduled to have bariatric surgery in
the coming months.
"Cherie and I have always done
everything as a team," says Mark.
"The biggest relief after having this
surgery is knowing that 10 to 15 years
from now we will be healthier and
have a better quality of life. And that
means more time that we will be able
to spend together."
