Residents of Northwest Houston take heart – a true collaboration is elevating heart care at Methodist Willowbrook Hospital by uniting the strength of community cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons with the world-renowned expertise of physicians from the Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center. Working together to develop a comprehensive heart program in a personalized environment, patients benefit from state-of-the-art diagnostics, noninvasive treatment options, as well as advanced surgical care when needed, from physicians associated with the Heart and Vascular Center.
And this new approach to heart care is getting rave reviews. Mr. Jerry Rush, a resident of Northwest Houston, recently had successful open heart surgery at the new Heart and Vascular Center at Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, and he couldn't be happier. "Methodist Willowbrook Hospital has restored my faith in health care,” says Mr. Rush. "The hospital and the physicians have provided the best quality care and service among any business in any industry that I have
ever known.” These are powerful words from a man who just had an "off-pump” coronary artery bypass surgery.
Offering a Collaborative Approach
"This collaborative approach to heart care is truly the best of both worlds,” says Devinder Bhatia, MD, the cardiovascular surgeon who performed Mr. Rush's heart surgery. "It is satisfying to offer this level of advanced heart care in Northwest Houston. The caliber of the physicians and staff associated with the Heart and Vascular Center truly elevates Methodist Willowbrook Hospital as a premier tertiary heart care center.”
Physicians and surgeons associated with Methodist Willowbrook Hospital and the Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center are leaders in performing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) like that performed on Mr. Rush. In a coronary artery bypass, a surgeon takes a blood vessel from the chest or leg area and attaches it to the aorta, creating a "bypass” around the clogged section to restore blood flow to the heart. Instead of stopping the heart and using a heart-lung machine, a surgeon can bypass a blockage "off-pump,” or while the heart is beating.
"Off-pump, or ‘beating heart' CABG can greatly speed recovery for patients,” says Mahesh Ramchandani, MD, a Methodist cardiovascular surgeon
and administrative director for the community programs affiliated with the Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center. "Research suggests a number of patient benefits including less time in ICU, shorter hospital stays overall,
less blood loss and fewer needs

One Convenient Care Location
The Heart and Vascular Center at Methodist Willowbrook Hospital is a
one-stop destination offering a full spectrum of diagnostic and acute care services. "There's no need to visit multiple providers or travel to different locations for tests and treatments, even for the most complex cardiovascular problems,” says Aditya Samal, MD, director, Division of Cardiology at Methodist Willowbrook Hospital. "This
is an advantage to patients like Mr. Rush who do not want the stress of traveling to the medical center for care and who have a network of family support right here in their community. Mr. Rush had a quick and positive recovery, thanks to the excellent clinical team and the support
of family members at his bedside.”
Mr. Rush is thankful for the cutting- edge medical care provided by his
team of physicians and clinicians at Methodist Willowbrook. But he is most thankful for the personalized touch and customer service that is so often missing in today's environment.
