Senior Fitness The following fitness classes are ongoing every week. There is no registration required. Just come to the Gerlach Center before the start of the class, dressed comfortably. If you are an AdvantAge member, the classes are $2 each time you come; if not an AdvantAge member, they are $4 each time you come. AdvantAge membership is $10 per year for a single person or $15 for a couple living at the same address. Call (614) 566-5858 to join the AdvantAge program. T'ai Chi for Movement and Balance A 45-minute class to improve movement and gait. Tuesdays and Thursdays; 10 a.m. $2 for AdvantAge members, $4 for non-members Gentle Aerobics for Strength and Lung Expansion A 50-minute aerobics and strength class for those beginning or maintaining a fitness program. Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays; 8:30 a.m. OR Tuesdays; 8:45 a.m. OR Fridays; 9:30 a.m. $2 for AdvantAge members; $4 for non-members Yoga for Limbering and Balance A gentle workout that includes slow-motion stretching and limbering. Wednesdays, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. $2 for AdvantAge members; $4 for non-members Food for Thought Series Food for Thought seminars are held on Thursdays from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the John J. Watercolor 101 If you have a new or renewed interest in learning to watercolor for personal enjoyment or relaxation, this education session will provide you with “need to know” information. Sept. 17 Speaker: Leslie Meyer-Miller, Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging Rebalancing Your Portfolio Do you need to rebalance your investment and savings portfolio? Sept. 24 Speaker: Jerry Snyder, CFP, and Jay Lindner, CFP, Retirement Strategies Computer Classes Web Wise Boomers and Seniors offers computer training for the 50+ crowd. Hands-on, buddy system training is limited to 10 students per class. All equipment provided. Booklets provided for each two-part class. Classes are held at the John J. Registration deadline is three business days before each two-part class begins. Please call (614) 937-2124 with any questions. Basic Computers 1 & 2 No previous computer knowledge is required. This class covers the basics of how to turn a computer on and off, using the mouse, the foundation of the Windows program and getting comfortable with exploring on a computer. Progress to understanding functions of the keyboard (not typing), inputting information into the computer, correcting typing errors, inserting and deleting text, and more. Tuesday, July 21 AND 28, 2 to 4 p.m. Basic Computers 3 & 4 (Saving & Retrieving Information) Prerequisite: Basic Computers Part 1 & 2 or equivalent knowledge. Basic computers parts 3 & 4 apply and review the skills learned in parts 1 & 2. Learn how to save information effectively, organize it on your computer, install new programs (software) and customize your computer to fit your specific needs using the control panel. Tuesday, Aug. 18 AND 25, 6 to 8 p.m. Basic Digital Cameras 1 & 2 Prerequisite: Basic Computers or equivalent knowledge. Learn what you need to know before you buy a camera and how to use it afterwards. Take pictures, transfer them to a computer, edit photographs, print and e-mail photos to friends and more! Students will download the free Picassa photo editing program to use to edit pictures. (Digital cameras provided if needed, but please feel free to bring your own if you have one). Tuesday, Sept. 1 AND 8, 2 to 4 p.m. Ebay® 1 & 2 Prerequisite: Basic Computers or equivalent knowledge. Internet experience helpful. eBay® is the Internet's location for an international garage sale. Learn how the site works both for the buyer and the seller. Learn how to safely bid and buy as well as set up your account to sell those items that have been gathering dust, but someone else wants right now! Tuesday, July 7 AND 14, 2 to 4 p.m. E-Mail 1 & 2 Prerequisite: Basic Computers and Searching the Internet Learn the basics of e-mail including how e-mail works and how to read, write, send, forward and reply to messages. Explore setting up your address book, sending to multiple recipients, sending attachments and more. This class will be taught using Outlook Express. Tuesday, Aug. 18 AND 25, 2 to 4 p.m. Microsoft Excel (Making Financials Easier) 1 & 2 Prerequisite: Basic Computers or equivalent knowledge. Whether balancing your check book, putting together the family budget or generating charts for work, Microsoft Excel can improve the way you turn data into information to analyze, communicate and share your results. Excel is a spreadsheet program to track and manage data, addresses and financials to create spread sheets, perform detailed calculations, sort data and create colorful charts and graphs. Tuesday, Aug. 4 AND 11, 6 to 8 p.m. Microsoft Word 1 & 2 Prerequisite: Basic Computers or equivalent knowledge. Learn the basics of Microsoft Word, including creating new documents, editing work, changing font sizes, shapes, alignment and more. Learn to save and retrieve documents effectively. Word allows you to create letters, record important information and write stories with greater ease than ever before. Tuesday, Sept. 1 AND 8, 6 to 8 p.m. Powerpoint 1 & 2 Prerequisite: Basic Computers or equivalent knowledge. Microsoft PowerPoint enables you to create exciting slide show presentations that can be used in business or for personal use. Just think of the slideshow possibilities at business meetings, family reunions, weddings or in school. MS PowerPoint will help you wow any audience. Students will learn to create their very own slide show complete with text, graphics, pictures and animation. Tuesday, July 7 AND 14, 6 to 8 p.m. Publisher 1 & 2 Prerequisite: Basic Computers or equivalent knowledge. Microsoft Publisher enables you to create professional-looking marketing materials without the assistance of a professional. Adding and editing photos and clip art as well as arranging text on the page, properly aligning the text, and creating word art are all skills that can make your next publication sparkle. Tuesday, July 21 AND 28, 6 to 8 p.m. The Internet 1 & 2 Prerequisite: Basic Computers or equivalent knowledge. Learn the basics of search engines and browsers, how to connect to the Internet and how to navigate your way around the World Wide Web to find information. Discuss browsers in more detail, download programs, search more effectively, store favorites and avoid viruses. Tuesday, Aug. 4 AND 11, 2 to 4 p.m. |
