Dodge the Unwanted Holiday Gift…
Extra Calories
A NIBBLE OF CHOCOLATE IN THE BREAK ROOM, A FEW COOKIES AFTER DINNER,
A GLASS OF WINE WITH FRIENDS - AAHH, THE TASTE OF THE HOLIDAYS. BUT
BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, THOSE LITTLE SNACKS CAN ADD UP TO BIG CALORIES.
WITH A LITTLE FORETHOUGHT, HOWEVER, YOU CAN SAMPLE TREATS AND KEEP
YOUR WAISTLINE TRIM.
- Set a food "budget." Decide ahead of
time which special treats you can't live
without this season and then partake
of only those foods. Skip anything not
within your budget.
- Cut back a little on calories during the
day when you'll be having a large meal
or going to a party in the evening. Don't,
however, starve yourself; that's a sure
way to overeat later. Instead eat healthy,
low-calorie snacks or have a mini-meal
before the big event.
- Control portion size and decline second
helpings.
- Substitute healthier ingredients in holiday
recipes, such as low-fat yogurt in dips and
artificial sweetener for sugar.
- Limit alcoholic beverages not only to
reduce empty calories but to keep your
wits about you, as well.
- Take a fruit or vegetable platter to share at
parties or the office. Snacking on produce
can make you feel full, helping you to
resist high-calorie treats.
- Exercise in some way for 30 minutes each
day. You'll burn off excess calories and
help increase energy, reduce stress and
fight off holiday blues. PL
