St. Mary Helps Re-Open Community Pool

The pool needed cleaning, repairing and a new liner system installed before it could reopen.
More than 4,000 Adelanto children enjoyed a wet and healthy summer thanks to the re-opening of the Adelanto community pool.

The re-opening was a joint project between St. Mary Medical Center and its community partners, the City of Adelanto and the Adelanto School District. Repairing and re-opening the pool fit easily into St. Mary Medical Center's Community Benefit program and was a direct response to the needs of the community. Increasing recreation, healthcare and educational services ranked as the top three community needs of Adelanto residents, according to St. Mary Medical Center's 2005 Community Needs Assessment.

Adelanto children enjoy community swim time at the re-opened community pool on June 16, 2007.
Working with the city and school district, the hospital secured a $69,000 grant from the St. Joseph Health System Foundation to repair the community pool and surrounding complex. The pool had sat unused for more than eight years. The 50-foot by 25-foot pool welcomed a group of smiling and splashing kids when it re-opened just in time for the scorching summer heat. Leaders from the partnering organizations dedicated the new pool with a plaque and by taking a plunge into the cool blue waters themselves.

Creating and expanding community assets that help residents stay healthy is a key objective of any hospital's community benefit program. The call to do more of this type of work becomes more urgent as healthcare leaders strive to combat the national crisis of childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes. St. Mary Medical Center plans to complete more of these types of projects in
the future.
