25th Anniversary of St. Joseph Health System
The seeds of the St. Joseph Health System began
in 1920 when the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange
reopened the hospital in Eureka and named it
St. Joseph Hospital. Although their original calling
to the area was to provide a Catholic school, their
mindset to always fill the need at hand led them
to healthcare during the flu epidemic of 1918.The Sisters operated under the mandate, "Go into the neighborhoods, assess needs and work with others to address them." That's how they operated then, and that's how they continue to operate today. St. Mary Medical Center became a part of the system in 1992 when the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange became co-ministers of the hospital with the Brothers of St. John of God. Many years followed before the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange established the health system in 1982, but the Eureka hospital is the cornerstone of the health system that celebrates 25 years of community and compassion this year. St. Mary Medical Center became a part of the system in 1992 when the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange became co-ministers of the hospital with the Brothers of St. John of God. Along with St. Mary, the St. Joseph Health System includes 13 other acute care hospitals as well as home health agencies, hospice care, outpatient services, skilled nursing facilities, community clinics and physician organizations in Northern and Southern California, West Texas and Eastern New Mexico.
