St. Mary Medical Center's Emergency Department earned the Emergency Department of the Year award from California Emergency Physicians (CEP) America, the nation's largest emergency physician partnership. CEP America selected the Emergency Department at St. Mary out of nearly 60 emergency departments eligible for the award. CEP America chose St. Mary Medical Center because it consistently delivers high-quality, timely care to patients while simultaneously maintaining a satisfying practice location for emergency department staff. The award is based on data and records from 2006. A Proud Accomplishment "We are very proud to be named Emergency Department of the Year. This would not have been possible without our incredible staff of dedicated emergency physicians, physician assistants and nurses," says David Bolivar, MD, the medical director of the Emergency Department. In 2004, the Emergency Department at St. Mary implemented CEP America's Rapid Medical Evaluation Program. This resulted in a dramatic cut in wait times. Wait times in the Emergency Department dropped from an average of 100 minutes in 2003 to 27 minutes in 2006 and have been among the lowest in emergency departments in California with more than 4,000 patient visits each month. St. Mary has successfully reevaluated the Rapid Medical Evaluation Program several times since 2004 to address increases in patient visits and other factors. St. Mary Emergency Department also received CEP America's Most Improved Site Award in 2003 and the prestigious ED Operational Excellence Award in 2004.
