Apple Valley students use software programs at the Paul Swick Family Center supplied by a Verizon grant and St. Mary Medical Center to improve their literacy and knowledge of healthy lifestyles.

Children and families now have more access to updated health education, thanks to funding from St. Mary Medical Center and the Verizon Health and Technology program.

In Adelanto, the library was in need of a computer designed for children. Library staff searched for just the right program to help children improve their reading and math skills as well as offer valuable health information.

The chosen program includes software with a skeleton that teaches kids about bones and parts of the body. One of its key features is that all of the programs are in English and Spanish, says Carollee Stater, the Branch Manager of the San Bernardino County Library in Adelanto.

"We've had a lot of families come in and use those computers," Stater says. "The kids all know how to do it, and they're sitting there with their parents as well."

The Paul Swick Family Center in Apple Valley has several computers for the community to use. With Verizon's support, St. Mary Medical Center has been able to enhance the health and wellness software programs available to participants at the center. These include software programs that help develop self-esteem in young people, offer tips for handling emotions and give advice on health and hygiene.
