Robotic surgery offers numerous benefits
St. Mary will be the first High Desert hospital to offer robotic-assisted surgery. The Medical Center is now home to a da Vinci® Surgical System that is capable of performing various minimally invasive robotic surgeries.
Using the da Vinci robot, the surgeon operates while seated at a console viewing a 3D image of the surgical field. The surgeon’s fingers grasp the master controls below the display and the system seamlessly translates the surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movements into precise, real-time movements of surgical instruments inside the patient.
A number of procedures performed today using traditional laparoscopic techniques can now be performed more quickly and easily with the da Vinci Surgical System. The advanced features and wrist mobility of the robotic arms and instruments enable surgeons to perform more procedures through one to two centimeter incisions.
For most patients, robotic surgery offers numerous potential benefits over traditional surgery including:
- Shorter hospital stay.
- Less pain and scarring.
- Less risk of infections.
- Less blood loss and fewer transfusions.
- Faster recovery.
- Quicker return to normal activities.
As with any surgical procedure, these benefits cannot be guaranteed because surgery is both patient- and procedure-specific.
