Is Weight-Loss Surgery Right for You?

RIDGEWOOD, NJ – May 16 – On the heels of last week's announcement that NJ Governor Chris Christie opted for weight-loss surgery in February to address his long battle with weight and to achieve optimal health, members of the public dealing with weight issues may be wondering if surgery is right for them. The Valley Hospital's Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery provides these life-changing procedures and enters into a life-long health partnership with its patients.

Weight-loss surgery, sometimes referred to as bariatric or obesity surgery, is designed to allow patients to achieve long-term, significant weight loss. Our surgeons offer several weight-loss surgery options, utilizing the latest minimally invasive technology available. Those eligible for weight loss surgery include people who:

have a body mass index (BMI) or 40 or above;
have a BMI of 35 or more and life-threatening obesity-related problems, such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, etc.; and
have failed non-surgical attempts at weight loss, including a combined regimen of diet and exercise.

The actual weight a patient will lose after a procedure depends on several factors, including patient age, weight before surgery, overall health, specific weight-loss procedure, ability to exercise, commitment to a healthy diet, personal motivation, and support for family and friends. The Center's physicians partner with patients to discuss their personal struggle with weight and apply a comprehensive approach to short and long-term weight loss success. The Center also offers a full range of support services including nutritionists, counseling and regular follow-up visits.
